Bicycles as Sustainable Transportation: the most efficient mode

"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race."
-- H.G. Wells

Bicycles are the most efficient mode of transportation ever invented, about four times more efficient than walking.

However, the bicycle industry is not sustainable in a multi-generational sense. Bicycles depend upon manufacturing facilities on the other side of the world. Ball bearings, chains and other critical components are not generally made in North America, and continued bicycle usage is dependent on a highly globalized production system dependent on vast consumption of fossil fuel to power freight ships and delivery trucks.

Bicycle Paths and Bike Lanes, Pedestrian Safety

- BL from Roosevelt to 11th, shoulder on west 11th to Veneta

- improve Amazon path crossings of roads

problem with “Ruth Bascom” bike path

- bike lanes - 5th / 7th in industrial area

- bypass chambers connector overpass?

- 5th / Wallis to 5th / bailey hill

- connection(s) from Amazon Creek path to riverfront path

- parallel to NW expressway through RR brown field from Barger to downtown (with shade trees)

Lane County should restore the bicycle parking at its headquarters that was removed when the Wayne Morse plaza was built. Placing a handful of substandard bike racks that are dangerous to bicycle wheels in a back entrance is a poor substitute for real bike parking that is covered in the rain near the main entrance (near the security guards).
